Louisiana Collaborative for Diversity in Nutrition
As in public health, nutritionists need to be diverse in race, culture, and lived experience to effectively dismantle barriers to equity and inclusion.
The Louisiana Collaboration for Diversity in Nutrition is a partnership between Dillard University, Southern University, Tulane University and Xavier University with the goal of increasing the diversity of the nutrition profession.
.
Why a Collaborative for Diversity in Nutrition?
- Over 90% of registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) are women and 82% are White.
- The percent of individuals in the US who identify as Hispanic, Black, Asian, or other race is increasing and account for a disproportionate share of the USDA WIC Program caseload, the largest employer of nutritionists in the country.
- Exacerbating the problem, 80% of dietetics students reported not receiving education or training from their programs that involved interacting with diverse clients.
Goals of the Collaborative for Diversity in Nutrition
- Increase diversity of the nutrition workforce by providing educational and career development opportunities to students at area HBCUs
- Provide continuing education and professional development to faculty at partner institutions to support
- Establish interinstitutional agreements to enable students in the collaborative to cross-register for nutrition courses, decreasing barriers to pursue graduate training in the field.
